5/5/2010 - Save Yourself the Trouble -- Mom Doesn't Want a Card and Flowers

by Gera Nevolovich

Toronto – May 4, 2010 – After 6,205 dinners prepared, 1,456 loads of laundry, and the mere gift of life, isn’t it about time you gave her something good?

This Mother’s Day forget flowers, cards and candies – she actually doesn’t want them. A Hotspex poll found that when mothers were asked what they want for their special day – their ideal gifts were time with family and a day ‘off’! Flowers and cards were among the least-mentioned desired gifts.

In an effort to make moms really happy this year, Samba Days commissioned a Hotspex poll to find out what mothers really want, and how some people go about planning – while others rush out at the last minute – to buy a gift. The poll surveyed 963 Canadians in April 2010.

While it would be nice to think that children – adults and kids alike – are always prepared come Mother’s Day, it is not always the case. The Hotspex poll found that when in a pinch, Shoppers Drug Mart was the place most people pick up a last minute gift.

“The Hotspex poll found that there is a disconnect between what mothers would like to receive and what they actually end up getting,” said Alex Barseghian, Chief Experience Officer of Samba Days. “Most moms report wanting a day off from the household responsibilities, and a chance to relax and be pampered."

Additional Poll Findings
Gum for Mum: Four per cent of respondents said they would hit up a convenience store if caught without a gift.

Mommy Dearest: One-third of respondents said they spend more on Mom on Mother’s Day than on Pops on his big day! And only three per cent of children say they spend more on Father’s Day.

Rich Mama: The majority of gift givers (72%) spend between $10 and $100 on a Mother’s Day gift, while eight per cent spend under $10, and four per cent of shoppers spend well over $150.
